Now that is about to begin a new school year is a good time for all people who are dedicated to educate us to consider whether we should change anything in the way we teach and why we should.
One of the unavoidable obligations of any educator is required to understand the mechanisms of functioning of the society in which we live and to be alert to new needs that arise constantly. Consequently, one of the things you should never do an educator is to remain anchored in the past, “he has always done so.”
Zygmunt Bauman says, “The time perceived by the current young generation is not cyclical or linear but pointillist, as the pictures of Seurat, Signac and Sisley.” This is the main reason why educators must begin to change the brush with which “paint” our way of teaching! We can not only use a thick brush to long and intense strokes, but we also need a fine brush that allows us to make many accurate and multicolored dots.
Students today do not want (and need) to explain the lesson to them, we give them the knowledge directly. They prefer to discover actively build through connecting different “points”, establishing relationships, working collaboratively.
But this happens not only with knowledge, also happens, for example, with entertainment. No longer they want to be passive viewers of a television program but, through social networks, want to express their ideas, their opinions, share their views with others … In the words of Michel Serres: “It’s over the It was to decide. “In other words, the master teacher was over.
Young people have access to “reality”, the world differently than we do as adults. It is neither better nor worse, it is different. Our obligation is to adapt education to the way they interact with the world and not try to change the idiosyncrasies of the new generations.
Teachers, for generation and training, we have a more linear view of the world and we believe the best way to teach is presenting the contents of a loop (methodology reflected in our educational laws). But the youth of today nothing seems more boring than always doing the same and the same.
Pedagogy needs to review (look back) all approach, since they were established in a world that no longer exists. We must make a pedagogy that allows us to navigate this world without liquid shipwrecked. Internet is the link that enables a new way of understanding education: more active, multi-directional, more dynamic … The virtual world is the key that will allow us to bring the school to the interests and motivations of our students, that is, the world in which we live.
