In the unorderly world of today’s society, we find little time to look deeper at the framework that holds together the human race. We tend to leave the exploration of the human body up to the allied health professionals. Nurses among others, are dedicated to understanding and studying the biological and physiological processes that occur within our complicated bodies. The processes that occur are very important to human survival. They range from unassisted processes to prescription processes. Through the study of these very complex reactions we find that there are chemical processes that must be in balance to maintain proper health.
That is where the nursing profession comes in. As nurses we are responsible for taking care of the sick and keeping the healthy well. Through the use of medications we are able to assist patients in an accelerated recovery from whatever may ail them. Another form of medication would be chemotherapy. We use this to slow down or alleviate cancerous cells. Other circumstances, such as mental illness, we are able to use medication to help the brain function normally. Not only can we help sick patients, but we can use many vitamins and minerals to keep the healthy from getting sick.
They help to replenish the many aspects of the immune system to keep people well. Yet as I stated before not only is medication a form of chemistry but we have the unassisted processes also. These would be the involuntary chemical reactions that occur constantly within our bodies. For instance, when you eat something, there must be a way to break it down into the protein, enzymes, starches and sugars that our bodies need to function. So the moment it enters our mouths, the process of digestion occurs. Therefore this makes the art of chemistry and chemical technique very important to the field of nursing.
We must know how much of a drug or vitamin to administer to a patient or we may cause permanent damage to them. An example of that would be, say we have a neonatal nurse that is administering sodium chloride solution via IV to a neonate. If the nurse proceeds to give the neonate even . 05cc too much then the neonate will probably not survive. We must not be careless with our patient care for we are taking care of very delicate lives. – 1 – The following is five specific examples of chemical reactions and their accompanying equations, that are in occurrence within the human body:
1~ Protein digestion and HCL production: CO2+H2OoH2CO3oH+ +HCO3 HCL is a critical chemical for proper digestion in the stomach. It is able to adjust to the pH level to allow protein digestion to occur. Approximately 2 Liters of HCL can be processed within the stomach, which happens to be 3 times more concentrated than blood. So then we can use the protein that was digested for energy within our bodies. 2~ Fat Formation: CH2OH 0 CHOH+CH3(CH2)14 COH=* fatty tissue and cells Fat formation is a critical part of life, but it has a very thin line to what is healthy and what is not so healthy.
It is a largely debated issue among the American culture, But what it inevitably boils down to is that too much fat is unhealthy for our bodies. Yet we need it to protect our heart, organ, muscles, veins, and arteries. We also need it for a healthy flowing digestive tract, to keep our organs from shifting, and to keep our bodies warm in the cold of winter. 3~ Glycolysis: Glucose+2P+2ADP+2NAD+ =* 2 pyruvate+2ATP+2NADH+2H+ +2H2O Through the process of Glycolysis our body gets the energy that it needs to function on a daily basis.
During this reaction Glycolysis breaks down glucose (carbohydrates) so that our body can convert it into fast energy. There are 2 molecules of ATP used to start the process and when it is finished the reaction yields 4 molecules of ATP. This shows that it takes very little energy to make energy, and it also shows that the reaction is exothermic. 4~ The Krebs Cycle: Acetyl CoA+3NAD+FAD+GDP+Pi+2H2O=* 2CO2+CoA+SNADH+3H= +FADH2+GTP The Krebs Cycle is a sequence of enzyme-catalyzed chemical reactions that metabolize 2 carbon units called acetyl to CO2 and H2O.
We need to gain GTP and ATP molecules to have energy. Each of the glucose molecules that are used produce 2 ATP molecules or Acetyl. Acetyl is the beginning step in the Krebs Cycle and this is what makes the process start. This process breaks down more molecules than Glycolysis to yield even more ATP. The Krebs cycle produces 36 ATP’s, which is 32 more than glycolysis. This shows us that the Krebs cycle produces exceedingly larger amounts of energy than glycolysis which produces only 4. 5~ Respiration: C6H12O6=* 6H20+energy
Cellular Respiration is very important to human life. Though it does not occur within the human body it does keep it alive. We take in H2O from the environment and exhale CO2 into the environment for the plants and trees to inhale to use the above chemical reaction to create oxygen or H2O. – 2 – Why I chose reaction 1: I chose this reaction because I love food. I have had conversations about it and it is a big part of my life. This explains what happens to some of the food that I eat. Not only is it a big part of my life but it is also a large part of society.
We are constantly having gatherings, parties and reunions that are centered around food. Even most of our major holidays are spent cooking and eating. Yet without the production of HCL we would not be able to enjoy the many different kinds of food that we eat, because our bodies would not be able to process the protein in our food. Then we would be unhappy and unhealthy. Why I chose reaction 2: I chose this reaction because I recently witnessed fat formation within my own body. When I spent 9 days in the hospital after my head injury I was not able to do one of my favorite things, and that is to eat.
So as those days rolled by and I did not consume anything but the Potassium that was being infused through my IV, I began to lose wait. Then upon my leaving the hospital and arriving home, I began to intake larger portions of food. But since my stomach had shrunk, I began to put on fat as my stomach began to expand to accommodate my new eating habits. This type of fat formation also occurs during religious fasting. Why I chose reaction 3: I chose this reaction because it is sort of part of the American society. We so often want a “quick fix” to our life styles.
Any thing that goes fast and is the easiest solution to a problem, we want. So this shows a lot of what we want, since it is an easy answer when we are low on energy. We are always rushing around and not taking the proper amount of time to take care of our bodies so we want something that will get us through the next couple of hours. Why I chose reaction 4: I chose this reaction because it also pertains to my injury. Since I had a TBI, or traumatic brain injury and an inner ear injury, I have a problem with dizziness.
If my body becomes low on energy then I not only get the regular dizziness that comes along with low blood sugar levels, but I also get about 5x’s more than that because I am already dizzy. Why I chose reaction 5: I chose this reaction because it is obviously one of the most important reactions that occur with in the human body. It keeps us alive and breathing, which keeps our heart beating and our brain active. It also keeps our environment healthy as we exchange carbon dioxide for the oxygen that our environment gives us.
