Should people be punished for trying to put food on the table? Well, I don’t think so. I want to address a topic that has the rich in an up roar, the squeegee kids. It’s true that the squeegee kids don’t pay taxes, but it’s not like they get health benefits from cleaning windows. Unfortunately these kids are being punished for making an income; nevertheless, they don’t pay taxes. And another thing, if the squeegee kids are going to be fined for panhandling, how are the courts going to find these kids to pay the fines. People also have to consider most of these kids are homeless for a reason of escape. Most important of all, it’s only a dollar or less, people don’t have to pay it if they don’t want to. The motorists just have a cleaner windshield. The squeegee kids shouldn’t be fined for trying to make money.

It’s true that squeegee kids do not pay taxes, but they also don’t get any health benefits for cleaning windows. Taxes seem to be the big thing, when this topic comes up, because it’s the only thing people could find wrong with squeeging. These kids are making about $40 a day, which is $280 a week. That is an average salary and it’s all tax-free. Squeegee kids may make ok money, but they don’t have any health benefits. If squeegee kids need to get a tooth pulled or get sick, they have to pay their own medical bill’s themselves; if these kids do not, they simply grow sicker and or have to live with the pain. These kids are homeless, why does society punish them more?

It’s unfortunate that these kids are being punished for making an income. These kids are homeless, at the bottom, but they still have the strength to push themselves for something better. Society is pushing these kids down every time they try to move up in life. Is the business class and the politicians so angry with these kids, some with out a high school education, found a way to not pay taxes, and beat the system. These kids figured out something that took thousands of people, who had university degrees, years and years to try and do, and failed. Some of these university graduates even did time in jail, and lost thousands of dollars trying. These kids accomplished something people have been trying to beat for years, why should society punish them?

There was an idea put forth to try and stop the squeegee kids, but it has a lot of problems. The idea was to fine the squeegee kids for pan handling, so they will be off the streets. One thing that was wrong with that was, there street kids, they have no homes. How are the courts going to make them pay if they cannot find them? Another thing how are the squeegee kids going to pay off the fines if they have no income? That is how a lot of them turn to crime, and prostitution; by doing this it’s not helping society it’s only making it worse. Instead of punishing these kids why not try to help them, by setting up work shops and educate them so they could join the work force to make an honest living for themselves.

Furthermore, most of these kids are homeless for all kinds of reasons, like escape. A lot of these kids were abused at home mentally, physically and even some sexually. These kids are supposed to be the future leaders, and society’s not giving them a hand, but pushing them down. Imagine living in a home where there is no love being shown. Living in a house where the people that were supposed to care, just makes these kids feel like their lives are not worth living. Being told, “your stupid” or “you can’t do anything right” on a daily basses. Being beaten by the one you look up to. Worse yet, being sexually abused by the one trusted the most. That is what a lot of these kids went through. Know one can blame them for running away. Society has to except it and try and help these kids live a normal life. There’s no doubt homeless kids have it rough, why make it harder on them?

Most important of all, it’s only one dollar or less. The people don’t have to pay it if they don’t want to. The people will just have a cleaner window. Think about it, that dollar is going to help with medical care and also food. Some people might say, “It’s going to help them buy alcohol and drugs”. That’s a choose individuals are going to have to make for themselves. Remember people don’t have to pay for the service the squeegee kids provide. Everyone has a good judge of character; pay the one that looks like they need it.

Here’s a thought, no mater how low you feel there’s always someone out there who has it worse. If you were that person wouldn’t you want someone to help you back on your feet. People try and go around living their lives like there is no problem with the street kids. There’s a serious problem with the street kids and we need to do something about it. Everyone has the god given right to be happy.
