The World health organization (WHO) defined health promotion as process of facilitating people in controlling and improving their health. Health promotion strategies are not limited, nor only to a specific set of behaviors. WHO as whole applies the principles of and strategies for health promotion to a variety of groups, risk factors, diseases and in various setting (WHO).

By providing education and enhancement of skills, health promotion is able to support personal and social development. This health promotion initiative is designed to increase awareness and educate families both in their personal and community health issues and practices. This health promotion will focus on diverse heath and wellness topics in order to promote a healthier lifestyle. The target group is a family in a community.

The purpose why the family was chosen is because families are the basic foundation of our society, if we are able to educate this family regarding their health and other health issues, the society would be more open towards health promotion and it would be easier to disseminate the information towards the community.

Aims:

This health promotion initiative aims to:

Ø  To increase individual, families and community participation with regards to health promotion.

Ø  To provide information regarding health promotion and its importance.

Ø  It aims to disseminate the information through health education of families and its community.

Ø  To promote healthier lifestyle in order to improve the quality of health and life.

Objectives:

After the health promotion initiative the family will be able to:

Ø  Increase their awareness regarding the importance of health.

Ø  The family would promote a healthy lifestyle.

Ø  Demonstrate a better understanding regarding healthy lifestyle.

Ø  Improve decision making with regards to their health and in their pursuit of a healthier lifestyle.

Ø  They would involve or participate in health promotion activities and events.

Review of Literature

Health is the source of life that enables people to live accordingly with productive lives. In doing so there are certain are certain prerequisites for health that includes peace and order adequate supply of resources to meet the needs and to protect our health as well. The challenge to meet this needs are somehow neglectable by some especially in the status of their health. That is why there is a need for health promotion.

Wellness as a reflection of health, involves a conscious and deliberate attempt to maximize one’s health, involves a conscious and deliberate attempt to maximize one’s health. Wellness does not just happen; it requires planning and conscious commitment and is a result of adopting healthy behaviors for the purpose of attaining one’s highest potential for well-being (Potter & Perry 2005).

It is not the same for every person. The person with chronic illness may still be able to achieve a desirable level of wellness. The key to wellness is to function at the highest potential within the limitations over which there is no control.

Health promotion is the process of having people gain control of their health and enabling them to do something about it in order to improve their health. It is a set of practical strategies that remains as an essential guide in assessing and addressing the major health challenges faced today and issues related to health.

A health promotion is a process in which it is directed towards enabling people to take an action. So health promotion is not something that is done to people, it is done hand in hand with the people either individuals or as a group. The purpose of health promotion is that it strengthens the skills and capabilities of an individual or groups to take action and act collectively, as group of individuals, to exert effort in the determinants of health and make positive change (Health Promotion Agency).

Health promotion is the activities that assist individuals in developing resources that will maintain and enhance well-being and improve their quality of life. These activities involves a person’s effort to remain healthy in the absence of symptoms and do not require the assistance of health care team members (Potter & Perry 2005).

The purpose of health promotion is to focus on a person’s potential for wellness and to encourage appropriate alterations in personal habits, lifestyle and environment in ways that will reduce risks and enhance health and well being. It is an active process, that is, it is not something that can be prescribed or dictated.

It is up to the person to decide whether to make the changes that will promote a healthier lifestyle. Choices must be made but only the individual can make these choices (Smeltzer & Bare 2004). Initiatives in health promotion address the needs of inadequate health promotion among the public.
