Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have adverse effects on ones health. It leads to a reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems (World Health Organization). Unfortunately the society; including all the necessary systems have neglected one fact about obesity. It is a life style condition and can therefore be avoided if one took the necessary steps.
By lifestyle they mean a condition that comes about when one is subject to a certain What people are forgetting is the fact that the victims are in more cases than one introduced to this condition; a parent being to busy will neglect the needs of the child. To be raised in an environment where one is given less/more attention, or not pushed into activities such as sports because of a lack of or unnecessary attention means that one is more likely to grow up obese.
It is therefore important to educate and inform parents of the importance of their influence in their child’s life; they eventually end up as adults and so their input is critically important. Obesity is most regularly caused by a variation of over eating therefore ingesting more calories than needed, a lack of physical activity, and hereditary propensity, endocrine disorders, medications or psychiatric illness.
Evidence to support the analysis that some obese people eat little yet gain weight due to a slow metabolism is inadequate; on average obese people have greater energy disbursement than their thin counterparts due to the energy required to preserve an increased body mass. This paper will therefore explore the various dangers of obesity. Most if not all patients/victims of obesity would like to loose the excess weight. Unfortunately it becomes a great challenge because the process is either too physical or too expensive. Therefore most are resigned to staying the way they are.
To the society especially today being obese or over weight is considered wrong and unattractive. The society has tuned itself to believe that being skinny or thin is the norm, the in thing. I believe that being obese is a disorder that can be solved. It is a condition that deserves much more attention. The various authorities have begun to establish policies to curb obesity. The society is therefore in my own terms wrong and biased (Stroud 2010). Dangers of Obesity: Heart Disease and Stroke: Heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death and disability in the Western World.
Overweight and obese people are more likely to have high blood pressure; a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. High blood levels of cholesterol and blood fats can also lead to cardiovascular diseases linked to obesity. Being overweight also contributes to angina (chest pain caused by decreased oxygen to the heart) and sudden death from heart disease or stroke without any signs or symptoms. The good news is that losing a small amount of weight can reduce your chances of developing heart disease or a stroke.
Reducing your weight by 10 percent can decrease your risk of developing heart disease by improving and conditioning how your heart works. It also reduces significantly ones blood pressure, and the levels of blood cholesterol and triglycerides/blood fats (Homko Carol PhD 2004). Diabetes Noninsulin-reliant diabetes mellitus (type II diabetes) is a common type of diabetes in the Western World. It reduces your body’s ability to control blood sugar and therefore a major cause of early death, heart diseases, kidney diseases, stroke, and blindness.
Statistics dictate that overweight people are twice more likely to develop type II diabetes than people who are not overweight. One can therefore reduce your risk of developing this type of diabetes by both losing weight and by increasing your physical activity. Furthermore, if you have type II diabetes, losing weight and becoming more physically active will help in controlling your blood sugar levels. If one uses medicine to control your blood sugar, losing weight and increased physical activity, regular exercising, may make it possible for your doctor to decrease the amount of medication you need (Homko Carol PhD 2004 and Life clinic 2010).
Cancer Several types of cancer are linked to obesity. In women they include cancer of the uterus, gallbladder, cervix, ovary, breast, and colon. Men are at greater risk of developing cancer of the colon, rectum, and prostate if they are obese or over weight. For some forms of cancer, such as colon or breast, it is not clear whether the increased risk is due to the added weight or due to a high-fat and high-calorie diet. This is of course, being strongly linked with weight problems as an end result (Obesity Focused).
Osteoarthritis is a common joint disorder that affects the joints in your knees, hips, and lowers back. Additional weight appears to increase the risk of osteoarthritis by placing extra stress on these joints and eating away at the cartilage (tissue that cushions the joints) that usually protects them. Weight Loss can decrease strain on the knees, hips, and lower back and may improve the symptoms of osteoarthritis (Bartlett PhD). Gout Gout is a joint disease caused by high levels of uric acid in the blood. Uric acid sometimes forms into stone or crystal masses that become deposited in the joints.
Gout is more common in overweight people and the risk of coming up with the disorder increases in comparable with higher Body Weights (Science Daily 2010). Gallbladder Disease Gallbladder disease and gallstones are more common if you are overweight, and the threat of getting the disease increases as ones weight increases. A the rate at which the young people are becoming obese might present the country with an inability to protect the country sooner than later. The nation’s defense depends on the young generations and if most of them become obese their value in terms of defense decreases significantly. These groups of officials have for sometime pressured the congress and other legislative bodies in the U. S. A, to adopt clear policies that will look into this matter.
This is therefore an issue of concern; they say prevention is better than cure. Being obese makes it very difficult for one to under go the rigorous military training. If the number of personnel reduces so does the ability of the country to protect it self (Metro Reporter 2010). In conclusion, Obesity has become more rampant over the last few years because of the change in life styles in many families. The television has taken precedence of activities like sports. Young people are engaging in sports less comparing to those in the same group who watch television as a pass time.
It is therefore an effect of the increased advances in technology combined with poor choices being made everyday. The nutrition has also changed; there are a lot of processed foods around meaning a lot of empty calories that accumulate to become fat in our bodies. The consequences are dire; heart diseases, diabetes to mention but a few. It is therefore important to ensure that we have a balanced life style; a life style that will favor good foods instead of processed foods, a lifestyle that involves a lot of physical activities over immobility and over dependence on technology. In the end it is our future that we are fighting for.
