Before starting (I think deserved) summer vacation, I seriously proposed to rest for a few days of my readings on education and spend hours relaxing to read novels my favorite authors, who have very abandoned the rest of the year. The purpose was firm and I have kept … the problem is that, as education affects us all and is an essential element in the lives of people I find interesting reflections on education in almost all the novels I read. The truth is that in the literature have always found a source of inspiration to reflect on various aspects of life and education.
One of the books I’ve been fortunate to read was The Lighthouse girl Jeanette Winterson. In the opening pages of this book, the author reflects through his characters about human nature and how everything that comes out of the norm and frightening battle with punishment:
“You’re not like the other kids said my mother. And if you can not survive in this world, you’d better build your own.”
That same still happens in education, what sanction “out of the norm” different. We are unable to take on people who think differently, they have different sensitivities, other interests, other talents that have nothing to do with language and mathematical thinking. That means that many children are forced to “build your own world” left out of the system and being classified as “failed” when its capabilities could contribute a lot to themselves and society.
A few pages later, the lighthouse keeper tells Silver, the protagonist of the play:
“I show (yes, anyone) what they are instruments, and the light will flash every four seconds as it has always done, but I have to teach you to keep alive the light. Do you understand what that means?”
How true in so few words! And how I see myself what it happens in our schools. We teach to read, calculate, read a pentagram, learn the parts of a plant and the characteristics of nature … but in reality, in our schools do not learn to love words, to understand the magic of numbers , to feel a melody, or taught to love nature. They do not discover the meaning of things, just limit ourselves to present them. In the words of Richard Gerver Create today in his school of tomorrow: “The issue is not that we have generations of children who do not want to learn, the problem is that not learn when they see the sense of that learning.”
Another of my summer reading has been know to lose David Trueba, one of my favorite authors. In this novel I also found a couple of “jewelry” on education, as reflections of Sylvia, the protagonist, on his school. Sylvia says “The reflection of the sun coming through the window and lands on the tables sometimes provides more interest than the class.” How sad and cruel reality! And in many cases our students do not care at all what we want to teach in class … and that certainly is our fault, not our students.
But Trueba reflection has made ??me think more is contained in this sentence: “To look Sylvia teachers have been discontinued its actual existence to be only teachers.” Those teachers who forget, for whatever reason, his real existence and teaching there are one, fail to connect with their students, not serve as their model, they are not able to transmit life values ??… they are not good educators.
Finally, a plea: I would ask all those who are concerned with education (from the point of view that is) to take a moment to think about what they tell us these stories and be able to build an education creative, empathic, innovation and takes into account their real protagonists: the students.
